Rhetorical Analysis
In Nicholas Kristof’s column, “This Is What A Refugee Looks Like” explains America’s misconception of immigrants by relating them to terrorists. Kristof’s purpose is to inspire Americans to be open to new things and people they don’t know so that people realize immigrants don’t come to America to harm others but to better themselves and their family. Due to a rise in polls agreeing to President Trump’s suspension of refugee program shows American’s fear of immigrants in America. This column is effective in using tone to convince Americans that immigrants don’t come to the U.S to cause violence but to get away from it. Throughout the column, Kristof writes in an enlightening yet formal tone, “They are refugees, escaping violence and desperate for asylum.” In America the word “refugee” usually has a negative connotation due to the image making refugees to be terrorist only looking to harm Americans. People often use “economic migrants” to describe someone who moves to another country looking for better living or career opportunities. Many Americans have been persuaded to think negatively of immigrant due to the thought they will cause a decline in the U.S economy which is a myth. Immigrants come to America for the same reason the Europeans came to the New World for freedom and more opportunity.
