Rhetorical Precis
Nicholas Kristof in the column, “Identity Politics and a Dad’s Loss” explains majority of America’s failures and corrupt events often involve identity, race, and gender. Kristof supports his explanation by first describing the Crutcher family and their hardships with family death that were indirectly associated with race, “And crime in America disproportionately involves blacks”. The Crutcher family is only an example of many African American families that have been inflicted with death due to death in the family. He then describes America’s past failures due to discrimination in identity, “slavery to anti-Catholic riots” and “the Chinese Exclusion Act”. This shows past incidents where America’s discrimination cause harm to others of different ethnicity or beliefs.Lastly the author describes the growing opportunity for African Americans & Latinos with their career opportunities and “class gap” if America removes it focus from the differences of others. Kristof’s purpose is to show the indirect link to race too many losses in America in order to show that America still has a bias toward minorities but is not spoken. The author writes a formal yet sympathetic for Americans. This work is significant he explains America’s unspoken bias toward minorities
